“Les Folies Françoises” is the title of a set of variations for harpsichord, published by François Couperin in 1722. There are twelve short movements composed over a bass, and Couperin provides elaborate “stage directions” that suggest he envisioned them almost as scenes from the theater, perhaps a farce about the “follies” of love. I thought I would paint them using my own modern-day associations to Couperin’s titles and descriptions.
